Our areas of intervention for sustainable agriculture in Niger
Nine areas, six programs, a seven-step approach—and the impact we aim to achieve for agro-pastoralists in Niger and the Sahel. Thus, discover how ASTRA works for sustainable agriculture in Niger.
Nine areas of work
Plant Breeding
Identification of high-performing millet, sorghum, cowpea and maize varieties, seed production and multiplication, varietal adaptation and dissemination to producers, in partnership with INRAN and seed producers.
Sustainable Intensification
Soil fertility, responsible fertilization and microdosing, organic manure and compost, conservation agriculture, agroecology, irrigation and water management: producing more on the same land without depleting it.
Plant Health
Integrated pest management, biopesticides made from local plants such as neem, and responsible use of pesticides, to protect harvests and producers' health.
Animal Production
Animal feed and animal health, good livestock practices and value addition for animal products, for more productive and resilient agro-pastoral systems.
Capacity Building
Hands-on training, agricultural advice, farmer field schools and entrepreneurial support for agro-pastoralists and their organizations.
Applied Research & Innovation
Participatory experimentation with producers, local adaptation of technologies and rigorous evaluation of their results.
Digital Agriculture
Digital tools and information platforms supporting agricultural advice and producers' access to services.
Climate & Environment
Climate change adaptation, sustainable land management, restoration of degraded soils, agroforestry and protection of natural resources.
Value Chains
Processing, marketing, market access and rural entrepreneurship, so that higher production translates into higher incomes.
Our programs & projects
Cette page doit être conçue comme une bibliothèque de projets, même si tous les projets ne sont pas encore opérationnels.
Agricultural Research, Innovation, and Technologies
Identify suitable technologies and crop varieties, establish partnerships with research centers, and conduct participatory trials.
Agro-pastoralists Field Schools
Create demonstration sites where producers can observe, test, and learn about agricultural technologies.
Access to Inputs
Facilitate access to certified seeds, fertilizers, crop protection products, livestock feed, and veterinary services.
Value Chain Development
Support producers in organizing themselves around promising value chains and strengthen those value chains.
Youth & Women
Promote their economic inclusion and entrepreneurship within agricultural value chains.
Digital Agriculture
Gradually develop digital tools to support agricultural advisory services.
A 7-Step approach
Assessment
Understand the constraints of producers and territories.
Identifying Solutions
List the available varieties, technologies and practices..
Research & Partnerships
Work with research institutes, universities and partners.
Experimentation
Evaluate solutions under local agroecological conditions.
Demonstration
Set up demonstration plots and farmer field schools.
Support
Train, support and facilitate access to technologies.
Monitoring & Improvement
Measure results, capture lessons learned and improve interventions.
